Unicaja conquered their 19th Andalusian Cup on Saturday, defeating Insolac Caja 87 86-61 at the Palacio Municipal de Deportes de Vista Alegre in Córdoba, in a final that the Málaga-based team decided from the first quarter against a Seville squad making their debut in the fight for the regional title.
A three-pointer by Melwin Pantzar opened the scoring and sparked a strong Málaga start of 10-2, sustained by outside accuracy and the intensity of Jonathan Barreiro, with the lead reaching double figures after a 2+1 from Tyson Pérez (15-5); another 2+1, this time from Nihad Djedovic, closed out a first quarter that had already put the title within reach (23-11).
Unicaja continued stretching their lead thanks to quick transitions and accurate shooting from Brazdeikis and Pantzar (33-15). Two free throws from Amine Noua pushed the advantage to +20 (37-17), but that's when Caja 87 had their best stretch, with back-to-back three-pointers and several free throws from Latorre that cut the deficit to eleven points and energized the Seville supporters who had traveled to Córdoba (39-28).
The comeback was halted by a 2+1 from Cameron Hunt at the buzzer (43-28) and the script repeated after halftime, with the aggression of Barreiro and Brazdeikis near the basket (49-30) and a three-pointer from Simonas Lukosius that restored the maximum lead (56-35); Caja 87 responded with back-to-back three-pointers from Nacho Arroyo, but Willy Hernangómez and Djedovic restored the twenty-point advantage before the 65-45 that closed the third quarter.
Unicaja increased their lead to twenty-three points right at the start of the final period (72-49) and reached their maximum advantage shortly after (83-58, +25) with Kendrick Perry, who hit two three-pointers in that stretch, as the main scoring reference on the way to the final 86-61, in closing minutes where both coaches took the opportunity to continue giving their rosters playing time.
Brazdeikis, named tournament MVP with fifteen points, eight rebounds and an 18 rating, was the standout player in a final that also marked the debuts of Pantzar, Hernangómez and Noua with Unicaja, while for Caja 87 the leading scorers were Ramón Vilá with nine points, and Aanen Moody, Archange Izaw and Arroyo himself, all with eight.
