Wembanyama Signs Maximum Extension with Spurs

Victor Wembanyama will remain the face of the San Antonio Spurs project for years to come. The French star has agreed to a five-year, $252 million extension, according to ESPN, with the final year as a player option.

The contract confirms what was obvious: the Spurs are building everything around Wembanyama. Still, the deal has an important detail, as the player has accepted the maximum of 25% of the salary cap rather than 30%, a formula that would have raised the contract to around $303 million.

That decision allows San Antonio to save approximately $50 million over the next five years, a valuable margin to continue strengthening the roster around their superstar.

Wembanyama comes off a spectacular season. In 2025/26, he averaged 25 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 3.1 blocks and 1 steal in just 29.2 minutes per game. Additionally, he was Defensive Player of the Year, the NBA's leading shot-blocker, an All-Star starter and a member of the All-NBA Team.

The extension is one of the largest signed by a player coming off a rookie contract and makes clear that San Antonio has no doubts: the franchise's future runs through Wembanyama.
