WNBA: Toronto Tempo Selects María Conde in Expansion Draft

Por ·

María Conde's signing with Toronto Tempo is now official. The new WNBA franchise has selected the Spanish small forward in the Expansion Draft to be part of its inaugural roster, opening the door for a possible debut of the Spanish international in the 2026 season.

María Conde's signing with Toronto Tempo marks one of the first significant moves by the new Canadian franchise in the WNBA. The 29-year-old Spanish small forward was selected in the Expansion Draft, which allows new teams in the league to build their initial rosters before the start of the season.

Currently, Conde plays for Famila Basket Schio in Italian basketball and has an extensive international career both at club level and with the Spanish national team. The player had previously been selected in the 2019 WNBA draft by the Chicago Sky at the 27th position, although she never made her debut in the league.

In 2025, her rights were acquired by the Golden State Valkyries during another Expansion Draft, but an Achilles tendon injury prevented the Spanish small forward from joining the San Francisco franchise. Now, María Conde's signing with Toronto Tempo reopens the possibility for the player to finally compete in her first WNBA season.

Conde's arrival comes at a time of growing Spanish presence in international women's basketball. Ahead of the 2026 WNBA draft, several Spanish players are among draft projections, including Awa Fam, Iyana Martín, and Marta Suárez. If those projections materialize, the league could have several Spanish representatives in the upcoming season, which begins on May 8. In that context, María Conde's signing with Toronto Tempo could mark the return of Spanish talent to the North American competition.
