Zalgiris has made clear who runs their court. The Lithuanian club is close to finalizing a new deal with point guard Nigel Williams-Goss that would extend the American's contract through 2029, according to BasketNews.
The move improves an already historic partnership. Williams-Goss arrived last summer on the largest contract ever signed by the Lithuanian club, a two-plus-one deal that ties him to Zalgiris for at least one more season with a mutual option through 2028. The new proposal would convert that option into three guaranteed years, securing the floor general until age 34.
Why the extension
The club rewards proven performance. The 31-year-old point guard was a key piece down the stretch last season, when Zalgiris reclaimed the Lithuanian league title and won the Mindaugas Cup, with a stretch from February onward in which his EuroLeague numbers climbed to the level of the competition's elite point guards. Playmaking, defense in crucial moments, and three-point shooting: the complete package Kaunas pursued for years before finally landing it.
A familiar face with a championship ring
For Spanish basketball fans, his name needs no introduction. Williams-Goss wore the Real Madrid jersey from 2021 to 2023, winning the Spanish league in 2022, two Supercopa titles, and most notably the EuroLeague championship in 2023. And that title carries the most fitting irony of this story: he won it precisely at the Zalgirio Arena in Kaunas, the arena that now cheers him as one of their own every week.
Two seasons with Olympiacos followed, adding the Greek league, Greek Cup, and two more Final Four appearances, before the move to Lithuania. A Gonzaga product—yes, another Gonzaga: the trendy university of the Spanish summer—he was the leader of the team that reached the NCAA final in 2017 and was selected 55th overall in the draft by the Utah Jazz.
When the extension is signed, Zalgiris will have secured its backbone for the complete cycle through the end of the decade. In a market where everyone is buying, retaining is also signing.
