GRANADA. Coviran Granada secured a vital victory over MoraBanc Andorra 89-86 in the Liga Endesa, a win that keeps the Andalusian side mathematically alive in the relegation battle. The Granada team, still in last place, relied on Luka Bozic and Lluis Costa, while Aaron Best was the primary offensive weapon for the Principality squad, which continues in a precarious situation after winning just one game in their last seven matchdays.
The game began with MoraBanc Andorra making the better start. The visiting team came out more focused, found success from beyond the arc from the opening possessions, and quickly took the lead (5-11, minute 4). However, Coviran Granada reacted with defensive intensity, increased their aggression on the perimeter, and changed the rhythm of the game with a 10-2 run that put them ahead (15-13, minute 7).
Buoyed by the Palacio de los Deportes crowd, the home side grew in confidence. Jonathan Rousselle led several important possessions and Coviran Granada managed to open up a gap on the scoreboard early in the second quarter (26-19, minute 11), after closing the first period with a narrow advantage (20-19).
MoraBanc Andorra struggled against the alternative defenses deployed by the home team and also against the pressure on Arten Pustovyi, who was closely watched throughout the first half. The Ukrainian center even received a technical foul after confronting the crowd. Still, the visiting team held on thanks to strong minutes from Aaron Best, who kept his team afloat until halftime at 41-35.
After the break, Coviran Granada came out strong again. Additionally, MoraBanc Andorra was hampered by Pustovyi's early fourth foul, a circumstance the home team exploited to extend their lead (47-35, minute 21). However, the game began to complicate matters for the Granada side due to injuries suffered during the game by Jassel Pérez and Mehdy Ngouama.
The team coached by Zan Tabak took advantage of that moment to react. They raised their defensive level and significantly improved their shooting percentages, putting together an 11-2 run that tightened the score (49-46, minute 25). Shortly after, MoraBanc Andorra managed to regain the lead (53-54, minute 27) and entered the final quarter ahead (62-65).
In the final ten minutes, Shannon Evans appeared, providing relief for the visiting team and making it 67-71 in the 33rd minute. But when the pressure was at its peak, Coviran Granada responded with character. The Andalusians regained control (77-74, minute 36) and took the game to a tight finish.
With the score at 82-82 with 44 seconds remaining, the game was decided on the details. There, Coviran Granada showed composure from the free throw line to seal a vital victory. MoraBanc Andorra's final three-pointer attempt to force overtime missed the rim and confirmed the final 89-86 score.
This victory allows Coviran Granada to remain clinging to survival in the Liga Endesa, while MoraBanc Andorra's situation worsens after another loss in the lower part of the standings.
The Granada side gains breathing room for the final matchdays, while the Principality team will need to react urgently to avoid further problems.
