Anthony Davis and Wizards Postpone Extension Talks

Anthony Davis is now eligible to negotiate an extension with the Washington Wizards, but formal discussions will be delayed. According to Shams Charania, the center and the franchise have decided to table the matter until the regular season begins.

The decision makes considerable sense. Davis arrived in Washington in February, but has yet to make his debut with the Wizards. Before discussing a new contract, both sides want to see how he responds physically, how he fits into the roster, and what the real trajectory of the new project looks like.

The plan would be to wait around 20 games. That stretch should help better gauge the situation: Davis's condition, his role within the team, and the competitive level of a Wizards squad that enters the season with higher expectations following several significant moves and the selection of AJ Dybantsa with the No. 1 overall pick in the Draft.

Davis's current contract also plays a role. The player holds a player option worth $62 million for the 2027/28 season, so he is not obligated to resolve his future immediately. He can wait, play, assess the context, and decide later whether it makes sense to extend his deal or leave the door open for free agency.

For Washington, there is no rush either. Davis played just 22 games in 2025/26, and his injury history calls for caution. Before putting a significant extension on the table, the franchise wants to see him compete consistently.

The situation does not signal a rift, but rather a pause. The Wizards need to determine what Anthony Davis they have. And Davis needs to know if Washington can be more than a temporary destination.
