ASVEL Admits Budget Issues as Tony Parker Calls for Patience

ASVEL Villeurbanne has officially acknowledged it is facing a delicate situation in planning for the upcoming season. The French club has issued a statement signed by Tony Parker informing of an immediate budget review for the 2026/27 season.

The announcement comes amid a market upheaval, after the club lost Sylvain Francisco before he even made his debut and with other major signings under scrutiny. ASVEL had built an ambitious project, but the financial agreements meant to support it have not closed at the expected pace.

Parker explains that the club had been working for months on advanced negotiations to reach a budget in line with its domestic and European aspirations. However, those agreements are taking longer than expected to materialize and that will have a direct impact on the start of the season.

ASVEL's owner, nonetheless, is trying to downplay the alarm. In his statement he insists that the project is not in question and that some investors who had already shown their commitment have reaffirmed their confidence in the club.

The reality, despite the cautious tone of the message, is that ASVEL is forced to adjust its plans. The delay in financing arriving could affect the roster, already-announced signings, and the sporting flexibility of a team that aspired to make a significant leap in the EuroLeague.

The Francisco case was already the first major warning sign: signed as the leader of the new project, he ended up heading to Panathinaikos after a transfer fee was paid. Now Parker's statement confirms that the problem was not isolated, but structural at least in the short term.

ASVEL is asking for time. The market, however, rarely waits.
