CSKA Negotiates Possible Return to EuroLeague for 2027/28 Season

CSKA Moscow could return to the EuroLeague starting in the 2027/28 season. According to Russian broadcaster Match TV, the historic Moscow club is already working on its possible reincorporation into Europe's top continental competition.

The operation, in any case, would not be straightforward. Although there would be no formal restrictions blocking their participation, CSKA's return remains conditioned by a very complex political, administrative, and logistical context.

The Russian club has been absent from European competitions since February 2022, following the invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent exclusion of Russian teams from the continental calendar. Since then, CSKA has continued competing in the VTB United League, but without a presence in the EuroLeague.

Despite their sporting absence, the Moscow entity has maintained its status as a shareholder within EuroLeague Basketball, a key point to understand why its name appears again in conversations about the future of the competition.

Its possible return for 2027/28 would represent a move of enormous impact on European basketball. CSKA is one of the most important clubs in EuroLeague history, but its return will depend on something more than just the sporting side.
