Daniel Theis on the Market After Slow Start with Maccabi

Maccabi Rapyd Tel Aviv's investment in Daniel Theis is not paying off as expected. According to Walla Sport, the Israeli club is already exploring the possibility of trading the German center if they find a team willing to assume his contract, just three months after presenting him as one of the summer's major signings.

A Difficult Contract to Move

Theis signed a two-year deal in August worth approximately $4.5 million total. Some reports place his salary at around $2.2 million net per season, making him the highest-paid player on the roster. That is precisely the major obstacle: Maccabi needs another club willing to assume that figure mid-season, something that is not abundant in the European market.

Less Impact Than in Monaco

The German's performance in Tel Aviv has fallen short of expectations. In seven EuroLeague games, he averages 7.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2 assists in just over 18 minutes, below what he produced last season with Monaco, where he was a reliable center in the rotation of a championship contender: 9.9 points and 5.2 rebounds, shooting 60% from the field. After leaving Monaco in June, he seemed destined for Tony Parker's ASVEL, but ultimately signed with Maccabi.

His track record explains why the Israeli club bet on him: seven seasons in the NBA, with the Boston Celtics as his primary team, and a key role in Germany's World Cup championship in 2023 and European championship in 2025. But Maccabi is struggling: they have two wins in nine games, are about to relocate to Limassol for their home games, and visit Partizan this Friday.
