Duren Skips Media Day as Wizards Enter Bidding War

The standoff between Jalen Duren and the Detroit Pistons has escalated. The center skipped the franchise's Media Day, and according to Marc J. Spears, the Washington Wizards have joined the bidding war for him.

The number nobody had revealed

Until now it was known that Duren had rejected a five-year, $200 million offer. What's new is how much he's asking for: $287 million—the full maximum salary.

That $87 million gap explains why negotiations aren't moving forward. The Pistons have dug in their heels and have no intention of budging on their offer.

Washington's Offer

The capital package would include Alex Sarr, Khris Middleton, and future draft picks.

Sarr is the name that gives weight to the deal: the No. 2 pick in the 2024 draft and one of the pieces the Wizards had built their rebuild around. Middleton, meanwhile, primarily provides salary-cap flexibility.

The trade would be structured as a sign-and-trade agreement, with two possible paths: Duren signs for the $200 million and is traded immediately after, or he accepts the qualifying offer of around $10 million and leaves that way.

The Other Front

Washington isn't alone. The Milwaukee Bucks remain in the race with a proposal that would include Myles Turner, Kevin Porter Jr., and a future first-round pick from the Miami Heat. The Sacramento Kings are also maintaining their interest for the summer ahead.

The 2025-26 Numbers

All of this is explained by what he did last season: 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 27 minutes, shooting 65 percent from the field.

It was his first All-Star selection and earned him a spot on the NBA's All-Third Team. He's 22 years old.

What Changes with the Absence

Missing Media Day is no small gesture. It's the clearest signal yet that the relationship has deteriorated and that the player has no intention of backing down, with the season starting in three weeks.
