Kawhi's Toronto Return Stalled by Clippers Investigation

The situation could drag on longer than expected. According to ESPN, the investigation could extend into 2027 if the league, the Clippers, and the NBPA fail to reach an agreement on findings or potential sanctions. The case began in September 2025 and centers on whether Leonard received money outside his NBA contract through a sponsorship agreement with Aspiration, a company that ultimately filed for bankruptcy.

The problem for Toronto is clear. If the team completes the trade before the investigation closes, it could assume any sanctions that directly affect Kawhi, including a suspension or even contract nullification. That's why the league already announced the trade is on hold until the situation is clarified.

The Clippers deny any wrongdoing and maintain they did not use Aspiration to compensate Leonard outside salary cap rules. The investigation is being handled by the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, while the players' union maintains a watchful stance and could pursue arbitration if it believes the NBA is attempting to impose sanctions without conclusive evidence.

The freeze leaves one of the summer's biggest moves in limbo. The Clippers and Raptors had agreed to Leonard's return to Canada in a trade that would send Los Angeles a significant package including Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, and draft picks. But for now, the deal is frozen.

For Kawhi, the case adds another layer of uncertainty to his future. For the Raptors, it means waiting for a star who would completely change the ceiling of the project. And for the Clippers, it's a problem that's no longer just about basketball—it could have economic, contractual, and draft consequences.
