EuroLeague Launches SuperCup: Real Madrid to Debut in Abu Dhabi

European basketball has a new title. EuroLeague and Abu Dhabi's Department of Culture and Tourism announced the creation of the EuroLeague Basketball SuperCup, a new competition that will officially open each season of continental club basketball. The inaugural edition will take place on September 18-19 at the Etihad Arena on Yas Island, according to the joint statement.

Four Invitees and a Final Four Format

The inaugural lineup brings together four clubs with strong credentials: Olympiacos, the reigning EuroLeague champion; Fenerbahce, the 2025 champion; Real Madrid, finalist from the previous edition; and Dubai Basketball as the host representative from the Emirates.

The tournament will follow a Final Four format, with two games per day. On Friday, September 18, Olympiacos will open against Fenerbahce at 16:00 CET, and Real Madrid will face Dubai Basketball at 19:00 CET. On Saturday, September 19, the third-place game will be played at 16:00 CET, followed by the competition's first-ever final at 19:00 CET. Tickets are already on sale on the Etihad Arena website.

The Next Step in a Serious Partnership

The new competition does not emerge in a vacuum. It is the natural continuation of the partnership between EuroLeague and Abu Dhabi that already brought the Final Four to the emirate, an agreement managed by IMG that is part of the league's international expansion strategy.

Official statements point in that direction. EuroLeague President Dejan Bodiroga spoke of a new chapter for European club basketball and the emirate's commitment to sport, while CEO Chus Bueno framed the tournament within the ambition to innovate, reach new audiences, and establish the SuperCup as a flagship event on the international calendar. On the host side, Saleh Mohamed Al Geziry emphasized the event's value for Abu Dhabi's position as a global sports destination.
