Fenerbahce 99-80 Zalgiris: Two Runs Seal the Victory

Fenerbahce needed two decisive runs to bounce back from last week's loss in Athens. The first came right from the start: a 15-0 burst that made it 22-7 and left Zalgiris without an answer for much of the first quarter. The second came after halftime, when the Lithuanians threatened to get back into the game. Between the two, Sarunas Jasikevicius's team built a 99-80 victory that restores confidence and leaves them with four wins in five games.

Zalgiris, coming off a win at Palau, traveled to Istanbul without Nigel Williams-Goss and paid the price in game management. Fenerbahce chained three-pointers early in the second quarter (36-18) and, with Braxton Key doing damage near the basket, reached a 22-point lead at the 15-minute mark (42-20).

That's when Carsen Edwards appeared. The shooting guard, who finished with 20 points, led a run that brought the Lithuanians back into the game: the second quarter ended 23-29 and the halftime score of 50-43 reopened the contest.

Fenerbahce's response didn't take long. A three-pointer by Shields made it 56-47 at the 23-minute mark and, from there, the Turks tightened up on defense. Zalgiris scored just 13 points in the entire third quarter.

A basket by Wade Baldwin at the 29-minute mark pushed the lead to 20 (75-55), and the quarter closed at 78-56. The fourth quarter, with extended rotations for both teams, was never in doubt.

Shields was Fenerbahce's leading scorer with 17 points, followed by Key (15), Will Clyburn (14), and Nicolò Melli (10). Twelve Turkish players scored, including Shane Larkin, who made his EuroLeague debut this season with 5 points after having played only in the Turkish league.

For Zalgiris, behind Edwards, no one else reached the 8 points scored by Jonas Valanciunas, Marius Grigonis, and Deividas Sirvydis.
