Galician Cup Reaches 40th Edition at Sar with Three ACB Teams and Breogán Defending Title

Galician basketball begins the season where it has for four decades. The Galician Cup men's senior tournament arrives this Saturday at its 40th edition at the Multiusos Fontes do Sar, a venue that hasn't hosted the tournament since 2013. The Galician Basketball Federation organizes the event with collaboration from the Santiago City Council and Obradoiro CAB, in an edition that FEGABA's president, Julio Bernárdez, presented as the "best moment" for Galician basketball.

It's not just a formality. For the first time, three of the four participants will compete this season in the Liga Endesa. Básquet Coruña and Obradoiro achieved promotion last season—direct for the Santiago-based team, via playoffs for Coruña—and Breogán remained after finishing eleventh. Club Ourense Baloncesto, in Primera FEB, is the only team not competing in the top category

The Bracket: Two Semifinals with Contrasting Profiles

The draw, held at the Pazo de San Lorenzo, set Leyma Coruña vs. Club Ourense Baloncesto at 18:00 and Monbus Obradoiro vs. Río Breogán at 20:30, both on Saturday, with the final on Sunday, September 6 at 19:00. Two children from the Andrea Foundation conducted the draw.

The second semifinal carries the intrigue: host against defending champion, with Obradoiro returning to Sar after promotion and Breogán starting their 60th anniversary season. The first has a different script: Leyma enters as clear favorites against the only lower-division team, but COB warned last year that they don't travel as guests, though they ultimately fell short.

Breogán: Back-to-Back Champions and Undefeated in Preseason

The blue team arrives in the best form of the four. Luis Casimiro began preparations at the Pazo dos Deportes with returning players Mavra, Quintela, Alonso, Andrić, Aranitović and Branković, joined by Bolton, Ilić, Brown, Peris, Vicedo, Andersson and Kasibabu. Since then, three friendlies and three victories: 110-76 over Sporting Portugal in Ribadeo, a win against Real Madrid in Pontevedra in Pedro Martínez's debut on the white bench, and 99-90 over KK Mega in their home presentation.

Historically, Breogán has 16 Galician Cups, four of them in the last five years. The last one came last September at the Coliseum, in a final that required overtime to overcome Leyma.

Obradoiro: The Host Still Building

Monbus arrives with minimal game action and measured discourse. Diego Epifanio has repeated that summer results don't set the roadmap, and the record backs him up only partially: a loss in the opener against Leyma in Vilagarcía—89-82 in the II Trofeo San Roque final, with 24 points from Verge Jr.—and a strong response four days later in Gijón, where they beat Asisa Joventut 77-96 before over 3,000 spectators, with 22 points from Barcello and a 33-17 rebound advantage.

The Santiago schedule offers no rest: after the Galician Cup comes the EncestaRías Tournament, with Valencia Basket as their semifinal opponent, and the preseason finale against Unicaja on September 20 at Sar.

Leyma: Two from Two and Nearly Full Squad

Carles Marco maintains a perfect record with two victories, though neither was comfortable. To the Vilagarcía win he added another in Palencia 102-104 after overtime, after being down eighteen points. Both matches were affected by FIBA windows: Caio Pacheco, George Conditt IV, Dmytro Skapintsev and Karlis Silins should already be available for the semifinal against Ourense, according to DXT Campeón. Básquet Coruña has only one Galician Cup in its trophy case, from 1996, and comes off losing the last two finals.

Ourense: The Spoiler Role

COB faces the tournament with continuity as their banner. Moncho López renewed through 2028 and has given the team an identity based on defensive intensity and youth development. The category gap exists—the club finished last Primera FEB in twelfth place, with 12 wins and 20 losses—but the tournament has produced enough surprises that no one should sign off on this matchup before it's played.

Tickets and Television

Tickets and season passes remain on sale, and FEGABA will raffle two official Galician National Team jerseys among those who purchase before 15:00 on Friday. Sunday's final is scheduled on TVG2; the channel for the semifinals remained unconfirmed at press time, though in previous editions the tournament was split between Galician public television and the federation's YouTube channel.
