Ofer Yannay Offers Dennis Rodman $100,000 to Teach Hapoel Tel Aviv Rebounding

In the EuroLeague there are eccentric owners, and then there's Ofer Yannay. The Hapoel Tel Aviv owner has sent a personal letter to Dennis Rodman offering him $100,000 to travel to Israel and conduct a specialized rebounding clinic for his players, according to Israeli media Sport 5.

The proposal doesn't stop at the figure. The package includes business-class airfare, luxury hotel accommodation for the former player and up to three companions, and a three-day itinerary that combines the training session with the roster, a media interview, a gala dinner, and access to Tel Aviv's nightlife.

The Owner's Argument

What stands out about the letter is the owner's candor in his diagnosis. Yannay acknowledges that his investment has brought the club to compete in the EuroLeague, but admits the team still hasn't solved one specific problem: it needs to capture more rebounds.

From there, the businessman explains his reasoning for the choice. He recounts that years ago he read a piece in which Rodman described how he had turned rebounding into an exact science, studying shot angles, ball effect, and its bounce off the rim to anticipate where it would land before anyone else understood it. That article, he writes, stuck with him. His conclusion is that instead of just talking about rebounds, it makes more sense to invite the person who turned them into an art form.

Why Rodman and Not Someone Else

The choice of recipient is not arbitrary. Rodman was a seven-time NBA rebounding leader, won five championship rings—two with the Detroit Pistons and three with Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls—and belongs to the Hall of Fame despite averaging just over seven points per game in his career. He is, arguably, the best example in history that you can be decisive without scoring.

It remains to be seen if he'll accept. When it comes to Rodman, any response is possible.

A Club Accustomed to Headlines

The move fits the profile of an owner who has spent years making Hapoel the noisiest franchise on the continent. The club brought in Vasilije Micic last summer, is negotiating these days with Russell Westbrook, and has been involved in unconventional episodes such as the emergency landing of Yannay's jet in Barcelona last May.
