Jonas Valanciunas Caught Between Lakers Interest and European Return Option

Jonas Valanciunas' future remains uncertain. The Lithuanian center, who appeared close to a possible return to Europe with Zalgiris Kaunas, continues to generate NBA interest, with the Los Angeles Lakers among the teams monitoring his situation.

According to reports from Marc Stein and Jake Fischer, the Lakers are keeping Valanciunas on their radar as they search for size and interior presence. The player currently belongs to the Denver Nuggets, who would be open to listening to offers for him and would view a potential trade scenario favorably.

Valanciunas played the 2025/26 season with Denver, where he served as a backup to Nikola Jokic. In 65 games, he averaged 8.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.2 assists, with a notable 58.2% field goal percentage—numbers that demonstrate he can still be a productive interior player in rotation minutes.

His contract situation adds more uncertainty. The Lithuanian has a $10 million salary for next season, but only $2 million is guaranteed. If Denver doesn't release him before July 8, he will receive the full amount for the 2026/27 season.

Meanwhile, Zalgiris emerges as a very serious alternative if Valanciunas becomes a free agent. However, growing interest from NBA teams could change the scenario and keep the veteran center in the American league.

At 34 years old, Valanciunas remains a highly sought-after profile: size, rebounding, experience, and scoring near the basket. That's why, although Europe is waiting on his decision, the NBA still doesn't seem willing to let him leave so easily.
