Kawhi Leonard Case Deepens With Another Alleged Sponsorship Deal Under Investigation

The Kawhi Leonard-Clippers case grows more complicated. According to new reporting from Pablo Torre Finds Out, the player allegedly had another sponsorship agreement, this time with Daktronics, the company responsible for the video boards at Intuit Dome, the Los Angeles Clippers' arena. Reuters also reports it would be a multimillion-dollar contract previously unknown.

The news doesn't resolve anything on its own, but it does add another front to an investigation that was already extremely delicate. The NBA has been reviewing for months whether Leonard's agreement with Aspiration, valued at $28 million, could have been a way to pay money outside the salary cap. That investigation began in September 2025 and is being conducted by the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz.

The Daktronics angle is especially sensitive because of its connection to the Clippers' new arena. According to Torre's report, a source connected to Intuit Dome described that sponsorship as a way to circumvent the salary cap by using the company as an intermediary. For now, that remains an accusation within an open investigation, not a sanction or official NBA conclusion.

The situation also has immediate sporting implications. Kawhi Leonard's potential trade to the Toronto Raptors is on hold until the NBA investigation concludes, according to an announcement by the league in July. Toronto doesn't want to finalize the move without knowing what consequences the case could have for the player or the Clippers.

The problem for the NBA is the timeline. Adam Silver already acknowledged in June that the investigation couldn't drag on indefinitely and that the league needed a resolution, but the emergence of new evidence could delay the process even further.

If it's confirmed that there were hidden payments to circumvent the salary cap, the blow would be enormous. Not only for the Clippers, but for the credibility of the NBA's contract system.
