Kawhi Leonard Officially Becomes a Raptor: Trade Finalized 13 Days After Clippers Penalty

The deal had been in place since June 30, but remained frozen for two and a half months. The Clippers and Raptors have officially completed the Kawhi Leonard trade to Toronto, according to Shams Charania, after the California franchise gave final approval on Monday. It took 13 days to digest the NBA penalty and resolve internal logistics.

What Each Side Gets

Toronto receives Leonard. The Clippers, in return, get Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two unprotected first-round picks, a first-round pick swap, and two second-round picks.

It's a considerable package, and that's the first takeaway: despite everything that happened, the Clippers have secured a meaningful return for a player whose contractual situation had been at the center of a league investigation.

Why It Was Held Up

The freeze has a name and a date. The NBA had been investigating for a year the relationship between the franchise and Leonard over alleged salary cap circumvention, a case that exploded in September 2025 with the revelation of a sponsorship deal between the player and Aspiration, a company now bankrupt in which owner Steve Ballmer had invested.

The resolution came less than two weeks ago and was severe: five first-round picks lost—from 2029 to 2033—a $30 million fine, and a one-year suspension for Ballmer, as well as for basketball operations president Lawrence Frank and business operations president Gillian Zucker.

Leonard, by contrast, came out relatively unscathed: $700,000 in restitution, no suspension, and no contract nullification. That last part is precisely what allowed the trade to move forward.

Return to the City of the Championship

For Leonard, the destination is no ordinary one. In Toronto, he played just one season, 2018-19, and finished it by delivering the franchise its only championship in history, including Finals MVP honors. He then left for the Clippers as a free agent, a decision that shaped the next six years for both franchises.

Seven years later, he returns. Though the circumstances could not be more different.
