Penya, the Triumph of a Feeling

I'll try to be as impartial as possible in this short article, but with my mother's house just meters from the Olímpic, and having grown up immersed in what Penya means, it's a bit harder.

There is no Badalona without Penya, nor Penya without Badalona. Basketball in the city goes beyond sport; it's a feeling that resonates in every corner of the Catalan city. A feeling that became pride this past weekend.

Joventut presented itself as host of the Supercopa Endesa, in a historic venue like the Olímpic, a pavilion that saw nothing less than the Dream Team play during the Barcelona 92 Olympics. The rivals: three EuroLeague teams. The task was not going to be easy.

However, Penya, with two outstanding performances, put together an enormous tournament and managed to proclaim itself champion, thus breaking an 18-year drought without winning a title. In the final, they dominated Barcelona from start to finish, and despite their best efforts, it wasn't enough.

It was a team victory. Naturally, the spotlight fell on the tournament MVP, a spectacular Nicolás Laprovittola, but it would be unfair not to mention the work of the rest. The ingredients of this Joventut squad looked very promising: Ricky Rubio's strong finish with his magic and ever-present leadership, Sulejmanovic's work in the paint, Alex Reyes' scoring, Ndiaye's energy, the three-pointers from Cheetam and Ellis, Nogués' defense… All seasoned by Dani Miret and his staff, who orchestrated the pieces sublimely.

The celebration gave everyone goosebumps. The communion between the team and the green-and-black fans was total. Seeing Dani Miret climb into the stands with the trophy and join people who were jumping, laughing, and some even shedding tears, certified the bond between team and supporters. Special mention goes to Ricky Rubio's face of happiness. Seeing him enjoy it this way is priceless.

The next morning, you could see countless Penya jerseys throughout the streets of Badalona. People displayed them with pride and a smile on their faces. Without a doubt, this Joventut triumph has been one of a feeling and a way of life. The people of Badalona know it very well.
