Lakers Could Target P.J. Washington as Trade Market Alternative

The Los Angeles Lakers continue searching for a starting small forward to complete their roster around Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves. If the Jonathan Kuminga option doesn't advance, P.J. Washington could emerge as an interesting alternative in the NBA trade market.

According to a proposal analyzed by BasketNews, the possible scenario would bring Washington to the Lakers in exchange for Jarred Vanderbilt, Dalton Knecht, and a 2031 second-round pick from the Washington Wizards. For now, this is not a done deal, but rather a hypothetical framework that would make sense in terms of salary and basketball needs.

P.J. Washington would fit well with the Lakers' idea of building a team with physical profiles, defensive capabilities, and floor-spacing ability. The player already shared the court with Dončić at the Dallas Mavericks, so his adaptation to the system wouldn't be a complete unknown.

Last season, Washington averaged 14.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in 56 games with Dallas. Although his three-point percentage was inconsistent, his combination of size, defense, and playoff experience makes him an attractive name for a team looking to compete immediately.

For the Mavericks, the trade would only make sense if they're looking to balance a roster heavily loaded with centers and power forwards. Dallas would receive Vanderbilt as a defensive piece, Knecht as a young prospect with upside, and a pick to sweeten the package.

The Lakers' interest in P.J. Washington is still in the speculative phase, but the profile fits: a high-rotation player with physicality, experience, and a history alongside Dončić. Exactly the type of piece Los Angeles needs to complete its new project.
