Dominican Federation President Fuels Quiñones Transfer Rumors to Real Madrid

The lead comes from the Caribbean. Junior Páez, head of the Dominican basketball federation, assured on the Cancha Entera podcast that Lester Quiñones could be signing in Spain. He didn't name a club, but all eyes point to Real Madrid.

It's an indirect confirmation and for that reason it's worth taking with caution: Páez speaks about the player, not the operation, and his condition as a federation executive gives him access but not necessarily knowledge of the contractual details.

The shooting guard Madrid has been seeking all summer

The context is well documented. The white team has been scouring the American market for weeks in search of a scoring shooting guard to complete Pedro Martínez's project, and Quiñones has appeared on that list since late July, when Chema de Lucas reported that club and player were in talks.

The interest has an explanation that goes beyond the sporting side. The Dominican wouldn't take up a non-EU roster spot, a decisive detail for a squad that already has non-EU players and can only field two in the Liga Endesa.

Those who fell by the wayside

The course of this search explains Madrid's impatience. Lonnie Walker IV was the first option, but his contract with Maccabi Tel Aviv, with two years remaining, complicated the operation to the point of making it unviable in the short term. And Armoni Brooks, who seemed well positioned, ultimately chose Valencia Basket.

That second loss is what generates concern. With the EuroLeague-level shooting guard market practically exhausted, failing with Quiñones too would leave Madrid facing a very limited landscape. For now there are no rumors placing him at any other ACB club.

Who is Lester Quiñones

Born in New Jersey 25 years ago but an international with the Dominican Republic, with whom he played in the 2023 World Cup, the 1.96-meter shooting guard was developed at Memphis before building his career in the G League. That's where he shines: last season he averaged 23 points with 43% from three-point range in 36 games with the Osceola Magic, Orlando's affiliate.

He has signed contracts with Golden State, New Orleans, and Philadelphia, finished last season in China, and this summer played in the Summer League with Orlando, where he put up 30 points and 8 rebounds against Portland.
