The Atlanta Hawks have decided not to exercise their $24.3 million team option on Jonathan Kuminga, making the small forward an official free agent when the market opens, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.
The decision is surprising given Kuminga is only 23 years old with significant room for growth. During the 2025-26 season, Kuminga appeared in 36 games between the Golden State Warriors and Atlanta Hawks, averaging 12.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 22.8 minutes, shooting 46.3% from the field and 33.3% from three-point range.
Following his arrival in Atlanta during the past season, the wing maintained similar production, contributing 12.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game, while also making a positive impression in the playoffs.
With this decision, the Hawks free up $24.3 million in salary cap space and gain flexibility heading into free agency, while Kuminga becomes one of the most intriguing small forwards available on the market.
Selected seventh overall in the 2021 Draft, the former Golden State player has proven to be a valuable prospect thanks to his physical strength, finishing ability near the rim and defensive versatility. Moving forward, he will be able to negotiate with any franchise, and he is expected to have no shortage of suitors.
