Lakers Acquire Walker Kessler in Major Trade with Utah Jazz

The Los Angeles Lakers have completed a significant trade to bolster their interior defense. According to Shams Charania, the Lakers acquire Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz in exchange for two unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, plus first-round swaps in 2028 and 2030.

Kessler arrives in Los Angeles after playing the 2025/26 season with the Utah Jazz, where he averaged 14.4 points, 10.8 rebounds and 3 assists per game. Additionally, he shot an impressive 70.3% from the field, a stat that reinforces his profile as a finisher near the rim and constant threat in the paint, though he only played in five games this season.

The move addresses a clear need for the Lakers: adding a starting center who is young, physical, and has defensive impact. Kessler provides rim protection, rebounding, and interior presence—three aspects the team needed to strengthen to elevate their competitiveness in the Western Conference.

The price paid by Los Angeles is steep, with two unprotected first-round picks and two future swaps, but the franchise is betting on an interior player for the present and future. According to Reuters, the deal is structured as a sign-and-trade, with Kessler signing a four-year, $130 million contract.

For Utah, the trade means gaining significant future flexibility and accumulating valuable draft assets. For the Lakers, the message is clear: they want to compete now and have decided to invest heavily in a center who can transform their defensive structure from day one.
