Austin Reaves could become one of the biggest names on the NBA free agency market. According to The Athletic, the Brooklyn Nets are preparing a maximum offer to lure the shooting guard away from the Los Angeles Lakers, a proposal worth approximately $178.5 million over four seasons.
The contract structure would include very high figures from the first year. The offer would start at $39.84 million in year one, rise to $43.03 million in year two, reach $46.22 million in year three, and finish at $49.41 million in the fourth season. In total, a $178.5 million package that would make Reaves a central piece for Brooklyn.
The move would make sense within the market context. Reaves enters free agency as one of the most productive available players and in his prime competitive years. His growth with the Lakers, his ability to create plays, score off the dribble, attack the rim, and take on clutch-time responsibilities have put him in a very strong contractual position.
For Brooklyn, an offer of this caliber would be a statement of intent. The Nets need perimeter talent, playmaking, and a piece capable of assuming offensive load immediately. Reaves would not arrive as a complementary player, but as someone expected to have significant ball-handling duties and become one of the main faces of the project.
The big question will be the Lakers' response. The Los Angeles franchise can offer him more years and more total money than any rival, with a figure that could reach $239 million over five seasons. Additionally, Reaves has shown on several occasions his comfort in Los Angeles and his fit within the team. However, a $178.5 million offer over four years would force the Lakers' front office to make an important decision.
The Reaves situation is shaping up to be one of the focal points of the offseason. Brooklyn has the financial flexibility and the need to move aggressively, while the Lakers will have to evaluate how far they're willing to go to retain a player who has evolved from a complementary piece into an asset of enormous value across the league.
