Matt Thomas Joins Unicaja as Perimeter Reinforcement

Unicaja Baloncesto has reached an agreement to sign Matt Thomas (6'3", 32 years old). The American shooting guard, with experience in the Liga Endesa, joins Málaga for the next two months, with an option to extend through the end of the season. Perimeter reinforcement. Unicaja Baloncesto has reached an agreement to add American shooting guard Matt Thomas (6'3", 32 years old) to its roster. The player, a native of Decatur, Illinois, signs for the next two months, with an option through the end of the season, pending medical clearance. The wing will arrive in Málaga on Monday and, the following day, will undergo his medical examination before joining training sessions.

Matt Thomas is a sharpshooter with experience in the Liga Endesa, EuroLeague, and NBA. Developed at Iowa State University, he turned professional with Monbus Obradoiro in the 2017-18 season, averaging 15.4 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in the Liga Endesa. His impressive debut led him to join Valencia Basket the following season, where he averaged 11.4 points per game in the domestic competition and 12.7 points with 47.7% from three in the Eurocup, a title he would go on to win. Notably, Thomas won the Liga Endesa Three-Point Contest in 2019.

After two successful years in Spain, the wing made the jump to the NBA, playing for the Toronto Raptors (2019-21), Utah Jazz (2021), and Chicago Bulls (2021-22). In total, he appeared in 126 games in the American league, shooting 40.4% from three-point range.

Thomas later returned to Europe in January 2023 to join Greek side Panathinaikos, competing in the EuroLeague and averaging 8.1 points, 2 rebounds, and 40.5% from three in 10 games. That summer he moved to ALBA Berlin, where he regained significant playing time over two seasons in Germany (2023-24 and 2024-25). His averages in the Bundesliga were 4.1 points in his first year and 14.6 in his second, along with 11 points, 2 rebounds, and 44.7% from three in 51 EuroLeague games with the German club.

Last season he returned to the Liga Endesa, starting the campaign with Coviran Granada, appearing in 14 games with impressive numbers including 14.6 points per game, 2.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and three three-pointers made per game at 46.1% accuracy. In January 2026, he moved to Turkish side Besiktas, competing in the Eurocup through the end of the season.

Now the player will bring his scoring talent to Málaga for the next two months, with an option to extend his contract through the end of the season.
