Mavra leads Breogán to victory at Nou Congost (95-101)

Río Breogán has started the Liga Endesa season strongly. Luis Casimiro's team won Saturday at Nou Congost (95-101) and now have two victories in two matchdays, a start the Lugo club has only achieved five times in its history. They did so after overcoming a dominant start by Manresa and with an outstanding performance by Dominik Mavra: 22 points, 10 assists and a rating of 35.

A rocky start

Manresa came out as expected, with a very high pace and punishing every visiting mistake with quick transitions. Within two minutes they led 9-2, and Casimiro had to call a timeout shortly after at 14-3. The Catalans, led by Allen, who scored 10 points in the first quarter, built a twelve-point lead at the midpoint of the period (21-9).

Breogán's response was to tighten their defense in the paint to stop Manresa's one-on-one attacks. The adjustment worked: with Mavra directing and scoring, the Galicians cut it to 24-19 at the 8-minute mark, and a three-pointer by Francis Alonso in the final minute brought it to one point. Two free throws by the hosts closed the first quarter at 27-24.

The second quarter changes the game

Breogán was still struggling from three-point range (2 of 8), but their defense improved. A three-pointer by Mavra tied the score (30-28, 14th minute) and forced Diego Ocampo to call a timeout. It didn't help: with the Croatian point guard directing and Peris and Brown hitting from beyond the arc, the Galicians took the lead (34-39, 16th minute).

Defense, with Kasibabu very important off the bench, and rebounding control (18-15 in the first half) propelled the visitors. A 3-11 run in the final minutes brought the score to 37-50, and halftime arrived at 40-51: a second quarter of 13-27. Mavra went to the locker room with 15 points without missing a shot, 8 assists and a rating of 28.

Breogán opens up the lead

Manresa tried to react after the break, but continued to struggle: 25% from three-point range and 64% from the free throw line at that point. Breogán extended their lead to 19 points (43-62, 23rd minute) and continued to punish on the fast break thanks to their rebounding dominance (51-68, 26th minute).

A three-pointer by Allen gave the hosts some hope, but the Lugo team maintained control (60-78, 28th minute). A three-pointer by Bolton at the buzzer closed the third quarter with the visitors' largest lead: 67-89, 22 points.

A final quarter without real scares

Manresa tried everything in the final quarter, applying full-court pressure on the inbound. Breogán lost some offensive fluidity but maintained their distance (76-94, 35th minute), until a 5-0 run cut it to 13 points (81-94) and forced Casimiro to call a timeout.

A 2+1 by Brown and another play by Mavra restored calm to the visitors. With Breogán becoming too conservative, Manresa strung together penetrations to get within ten points (91-101) with 1:35 remaining, and the final quarter closed with a 28-12 run that left the final score at a deceptive 95-101. The game had been decided long before.
