Mikal Bridges and Jalen Brunson Stop Historic Spurs Streak as Knicks Dominate at Madison Square Garden
NEW YORK — The New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 114-89 in the NBA, ending the Texas team's 11-game winning streak in a game that was decided by a devastating 26-2 run in the first half.
Mikal Bridges led the home team with 25 points, while Jalen Brunson added 24 in a decisive performance to stop the hottest team of the past month. San Antonio, which had completed February undefeated, started March with a resounding loss at Madison Square Garden.
The start was promising for the Spurs. A three-pointer by Stephon Castle put them up 19-7 with 4:05 left in the first quarter, forcing the Knicks to respond. The answer came in the final stretch of the period: Jalen Brunson scored 11 points in the last 1:52 and allowed New York to close the first quarter ahead (22-21).
The second quarter proved decisive. The Knicks opened with an 11-0 run and extended their lead to complete a 26-2 stretch that completely dismantled San Antonio. A basket by Mikal Bridges established a 33-21 lead, and the advantage reached as high as 26 points, a gap the visitors could never close.
Victor Wembanyama delivered a much more productive performance than in his previous two games—in which he had been limited to 12 points each—and finished with 25 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks. However, collective problems weighed too heavily: 22 turnovers that resulted in 24 points for New York and clear local dominance on the boards (54-41) made the difference.
Mohamed Diawara added 14 points off the bench for the Knicks, who had already beaten the Spurs this season in the NBA Cup final in Las Vegas. That victory was part of a solid start to the season (23-9), though the team later went through a more inconsistent stretch (15-13 since then, beginning with a 134-132 loss to San Antonio on New Year's Eve).
The Spurs, who had become the first team in NBA history to complete an undefeated month while scoring at least 110 points in each game with a minimum of ten games played, saw their offensive momentum halted in New York.
With this result, the Knicks strengthen their position in the Eastern Conference, while San Antonio interrupts one of the most notable streaks of the season at the start of March.
