sep 27 2026Movistar Estudiantes returns to Movistar Arena months after missing promotion in Coruña. They did so in the best possible way, defeating newly promoted Caja 87, despite significant early struggles for the Madrid-based team.
The Madrid side presented a completely different roster, with only Lucas, Juampi, Pettit, and Omar remaining from before. In this first game of the season, Iván Aurrecoechea and Fernando Zurbriggen were unavailable.
Caja 87 began their first experience in Primera FEB by standing up to one of the favorites for promotion, staying close on the scoreboard; however, they remained behind throughout the quarter. Toni Ten's squad showed confused play, evidence that it was the first game of the season. The Seville side closed the period close on the scoreboard at 12-9.
The visitors came within one point on more than one occasion. What was setting the pace of the game was three-point shooting, or rather, the lack of success in those shots (2/13 for Toni Ten's team and 2/10 for Juan Ignacio Díez's). The Madrid side lost that advantage which, though never extensive, seemed secure, and found themselves trailing at halftime 30-33 (18-24).
After a well-deserved tribute to Jayson Granger, the home side regained the lead on the scoreboard. The locals began to feel better and the southern Spanish team reduced their scoring pace. 56-49 (26-16). The final quarter sealed the good rhythm of Toni Ten's squad, who managed to create a comfortable lead for this final period from which they never looked back. The game ended 78-65 (22-16).
The best player for the home team was Juampi Vaulet, with 11 points on 5-7 shooting, 7 rebounds totaling 15 points of valuation and +15.
