NBA: Adam Silver Anticipates Future With More Technology and Fewer Referee Reviews

The NBA continues exploring new ways to modernize the game, and one of them could directly impact officiating. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has explained that the league is working on a system similar to Hawk-Eye, used in tennis, to automatically resolve certain plays.

According to Silver, the idea is to rely on cameras distributed throughout the court and artificial intelligence systems to make objective decisions without the need for lengthy reviews. In this way, plays such as out-of-bounds calls and other easily measurable situations could be resolved instantly.

The goal is not to completely replace referees, but to reduce interruptions and speed up the pace of games. Interpretive decisions would continue to depend on human judgment, while technology would handle those plays where there is no room for interpretation.

Although there is no concrete date for implementation yet, Silver's comments confirm that the NBA continues to bet on innovation and that the role of artificial intelligence in professional basketball will grow increasingly important in the coming years.
