OKLAHOMA CITY. The Oklahoma City Thunder opened their Western Conference semifinal series with authority, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers 108-90 in Game 1 of the NBA playoffs. Chet Holmgren delivered a dominant performance with 24 points and 12 rebounds, while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Ajay Mitchell each added 18 points as the Thunder remain undefeated in the postseason.
Oklahoma City Thunder's victory once again confirmed the superiority they had already demonstrated during the regular season against the Lakers. The defending NBA champion improved to 5-0 in these playoffs despite still being without Jalen Williams, absent for the third consecutive game due to a left hamstring injury.
The Los Angeles Lakers, meanwhile, continued to struggle offensively without Luka Dončić, sidelined for a month with an injury. LeBron James kept the Lakers afloat for much of the game with 27 points, while Rui Hachimura contributed 18, but the team never found offensive continuity. Austin Reaves, one of the Lakers' primary offensive weapons during the season, was limited to just eight points on a poor 3-of-16 shooting performance.
The game started promisingly for the Lakers. LeBron James led a quick 7-0 run to open the game, scoring five of those points and taking advantage of Oklahoma City's long competitive rest, returning after eight days without playing.
However, the Thunder gradually found their rhythm. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander began creating advantages off the dribble and Holmgren dominated the paint on both ends of the floor. Oklahoma City closed the first quarter ahead 31-26 despite LeBron's 12 early points.
The Thunder's physical and defensive superiority began making a difference in the second quarter. A spectacular alley-oop finished by Chet Holmgren off an assist from Isaiah Hartenstein put the score at 48-39 and compounded the Lakers' problems, who also lost Jarred Vanderbilt after he suffered an injury to the pinky finger of his right hand on the same play.
Despite LeBron James' 16 points before halftime, Oklahoma City Thunder went into the break leading 61-53 and conveying the sense of having complete control of the game's pace.
The Lakers tried to stay close during the third quarter, but each comeback attempt was quickly neutralized by the home team. Ajay Mitchell, starting in place of Jalen Williams, played a decisive role in that stretch. The shooting guard hit a corner three-pointer and also drew a foul from Marcus Smart on the same play, completing an important four-point play that left the score at 84-72 at the end of the third quarter.
In the final period, Oklahoma City gave no chance. Alex Caruso punished the fast break with a dunk that extended the lead to 88-73 and definitively put the game out of reach. The Thunder's defense continued to suffocate an uncomfortable Lakers team throughout the night.
Oklahoma City Thunder shot a solid 49.4% from the field, made 13 three-pointers and forced 17 turnovers from the Los Angeles Lakers, dominating practically every aspect of the game. Additionally, Mark Daigneault's team continues to prove it is one of the most complete and physical teams in these NBA playoffs.
The Thunder will look to go up 2-0 in the series this Thursday again in Oklahoma City, while the Los Angeles Lakers need to regain offensive form and hope for possible physical improvement from Luka Dončić to prevent the series from getting away too quickly.
