NBA: Detroit Pistons Rally to Even Series vs. Orlando Magic, End Historic Home Playoff Losing Streak (98-83)
DETROIT. The Detroit Pistons defeated the Orlando Magic 98-83 in Game 2 of their first-round NBA playoff series, tying the matchup 1-1 and ending a historic 11-game home losing streak in the postseason. Cade Cunningham led Detroit to victory with 27 points, 11 assists, and 6 rebounds in a crucial night for the Eastern Conference's top seed.
After falling in the opening game, the Detroit Pistons came out with renewed energy from the opening tip. Following a shaky start to the series, the Michigan squad took its first lead of the entire series on the opening possession and quickly built distance with a 14-7 run that set the tone for the game. Defensive intensity and a much more aggressive pace allowed the home team to close the first quarter with a four-point advantage.
The Orlando Magic responded in the second quarter and managed to even the game before halftime. With Jalen Suggs and Paolo Banchero trying to sustain the visiting offense, the score reflected a 46-46 tie at the break, leaving everything to play for in the second half of this NBA matchup.
That's when the Detroit Pistons delivered their knockout blow. The third quarter decided the game with a devastating 38-16 run, showcasing the defensive identity that led them to the best record in the East during the regular season. As many as six players scored at least five points in that stretch, while the home defense completely shut down the Orlando Magic.
Cade Cunningham was once again the focal point, though this time with much more collective support. Tobias Harris contributed 16 points, while Jalen Duren and Ausar Thompson each added 11. Duncan Robinson and Isaiah Stewart were also crucial, both finishing with 10 points, with Robinson punishing from beyond the arc with three crucial three-pointers.
For Orlando, Jalen Suggs finished with 19 points and Paolo Banchero added 18, but between them they missed 21 of their 35 shots. Franz Wagner and Desmond Bane each chipped in 12 points, in a sluggish night for the visiting team, which shot just 33% from the field and recorded its lowest-scoring output of the season.
Detroit Pistons' victory ties the series and restores momentum to a franchise that hasn't advanced past the first round of the NBA playoffs in 18 years. Orlando Magic, meanwhile, will look to regain control of the series back in Florida.
Game 3 will take place Saturday in Orlando, where both teams will face a decisive matchup to break the tie in one of the most wide-open series in the Eastern Conference.
