NBA: Los Angeles Lakers Crush Houston Rockets, Advance to Western Conference Semifinals (98-78) [4-2]
HOUSTON. The Los Angeles Lakers secured their place in the Western Conference Semifinals with a dominant 98-78 victory over the Houston Rockets in Game 6 of the NBA playoff series. Led by LeBron James and a devastating 27-3 run in the first half, the Lakers closed out the series 4-2 and will face the Oklahoma City Thunder in the next round.
The Los Angeles squad started the game with patience, weathering Houston's early push, which led by as much as five points midway through the first quarter. But from there, the game's script changed completely. The Lakers elevated their defensive intensity, shut down the passing lanes, and began punishing from beyond the arc until they completely broke open the contest.
The 27-3 run proved to be decisive. Rui Hachimura, Jake LaRavia, and LeBron James punished from three-point range during a devastating stretch that transformed the scoreboard into a 38-19 advantage for Los Angeles well into the second quarter.
Houston completely stalled on offense during those minutes. The Rockets missed 11 consecutive shots at the start of the second period and found no offensive solution against the visiting team's defensive intensity. The Texas squad reached halftime with just 31 points scored and a 48-31 deficit that already seriously compromised their chances.
LeBron James once again assumed absolute leadership of the Lakers in a high-pressure game. The veteran small forward finished with 28 points and set the competitive pace for a team that will play in the Western Conference Semifinals for the first time since 2023, all while facing the entire series without Luka Dončić, who was absent due to injury.
Rui Hachimura was also decisive with 21 points and five made three-pointers, while Austin Reaves contributed 15 points in just his second game after returning from an abdominal injury that kept him off the court for more than three weeks. Additionally, DeAndre Ayton dominated near the basket with seven points and 16 rebounds.
The Lakers managed leads exceeding 20 points during the second half. Houston tried to respond late in the third quarter with an 8-2 run that cut the deficit to 71-55, but any comeback attempt was quickly snuffed out.
The Los Angeles squad opened the fourth quarter with another forceful run, this time 10-3, including five consecutive points from Hachimura, to put the game completely out of reach.
For the Rockets, Amen Thompson was the leading scorer with 18 points, while Alperen Şengün added 17. Houston once again suffered greatly from their three-point shooting struggles, finishing a poor 5 of 28 from beyond the arc, with Reed Sheppard finishing 1 of 10 from long range.
The Texas franchise thus closes another season marked by a first-round playoff elimination, after also falling last year to the Golden State Warriors in seven games. Additionally, the Rockets could barely count on Kevin Durant during the series due to his knee and ankle issues.
The Los Angeles Lakers will now face a grueling Western Conference Semifinal against the Oklahoma City Thunder, the No. 1 seed in the West, with the first game scheduled for Tuesday in Oklahoma City.
