The New York Knicks are already working on the roster with which they will attempt to defend the championship, and one of their first priorities will be to re-sign Mitchell Robinson, who will hit free agency this summer after his four-year, $60 million contract expires.
According to ESPN reporter Brian Windhorst, the New York franchise wants to keep the center and will convey that intention when the market opens. Robinson has been an important piece for his defensive presence, rim protection, and ability to crash the offensive glass.
The main limiting factor will be his injury history. This season he played in 60 games, but in the two previous seasons he was only able to play in 17 and 31 games, a fact that could influence the value of his next contract.
Still, the Knicks believe his profile fits within the championship core and would be willing to make an effort to retain him, even with the franchise over the luxury tax threshold. New York wants continuity, and Robinson is part of that plan.
