NBA: Trae Young Emerges as Miami's Plan B if Giannis Deal Falls Through

The Miami Heat continue to pursue Giannis Antetokounmpo as their primary trade target, but the franchise is already exploring alternatives in case negotiations with Milwaukee stall. Trae Young is gaining traction as a potential option.

According to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, Miami is monitoring the situation of the point guard, who currently plays for Washington. While the initial expectation is that Young will remain with the Wizards, interest in him has grown, and the Heat could be among the most active teams if a trade path opens up.

For Miami, his arrival would make basketball sense. Erik Spoelstra's team needs a premier perimeter playmaker capable of scoring, creating advantages, and orchestrating the offense—a profile that could help the franchise escape the play-in zone and return to competing for higher seeds in the East.

Young's contract situation will be crucial. The point guard holds a player option worth $49 million, and while a contract extension with Washington was expected, any trade scenario could change the landscape. If he exercises that option, the market could interpret the move as a signal that his future isn't completely settled.

Washington, moreover, could have room to reconsider its project if it uses the No. 1 pick on Darryn Peterson, a point guard with enormous potential. In that context, the Wizards would have to decide whether to build around their new young talent or maintain Young as their immediate cornerstone.
