NBA Night: Dončić's 52 Points, 76ers' First Loss, and Jalen Williams Injury Scare

Sunday's NBA action featured seven games with the season taking shape. Lakers, Thunder, Timberwolves, Pistons, and Grizzlies remain undefeated, while the 76ers suffer their first loss and the defending champion Knicks fall to 0-3. Luka Dončić delivered the night's standout performance.

Lakers 132-123 Jazz

The Lakers trailed by 18 at the end of the first quarter in Salt Lake City (29-47), but a 45-point second quarter turned the game around before halftime. From there, Luka Dončić carried his team through a second half featuring nine ties and six lead changes, finishing with 52 points, 8 three-pointers, 8 rebounds, and 10 assists. Austin Reaves added 29. Lauri Markkanen (28) and Keyonte George (24 and 10 assists) led a Jazz team that dominated the paint and rebounding but struggled from three-point range.

Magic 111-102 Knicks

The Knicks led by ten with nine minutes remaining at Madison Square Garden (86-76), but an 11-0 run flipped the game and the Magic won the final quarter 40-27. Franz Wagner scored 21 of his 23 points in that stretch and added 13 rebounds and 9 assists in a game where Orlando played without Paolo Banchero and lost Jalen Suggs to a knee injury in the final quarter. This is Sean Sweeney's first victory as Magic head coach. Jalen Brunson (28), Karl-Anthony Towns (22 and 14 rebounds), and OG Anunoby (22) couldn't prevent a 0-3 start that no defending champion has posted since the 2011-12 Mavericks.

Pistons 106-93 76ers

The 76ers lost their undefeated record in a matchup between two previously unbeaten teams. Without Joel Embiid, who rested, and VJ Edgecombe, Philadelphia never led: the Pistons closed the first quarter up twelve (34-22) and controlled the game from start to finish. Cade Cunningham posted 26 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists, and John Collins added 16 points and 11 rebounds in the absence of Jalen Duren, sidelined for at least two weeks with a hamstring injury. Tyrese Maxey scored 29 and LeBron James added 18.

Clippers 101-108 Thunder

The Thunder remain undefeated, but the victory came with a concerning image: Jalen Williams left on a stretcher with 1:14 remaining after a bad fall during a drive. Earlier, Cason Wallace had departed with left shoulder soreness and Jaylin Williams with wrist pain. The Clippers got within one (97-96) with three minutes left on a three-pointer from Derrick Jones Jr., but Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, with 34 points, and Oklahoma City's defense, which forced 26 turnovers, closed out the game. Darius Garland added 16 points and 11 assists. Aday Mara saw rotation minutes for the Thunder, and Baba Miller saw limited action for the Clippers.

Timberwolves 117-94 Raptors

The Timberwolves opened their new arena with a comfortable victory and remain undefeated. They led by double digits at the end of the first quarter when the Raptors were 1 of 10 from three, and built a lead as large as 32 points. Anthony Edwards scored 26 points in just 27 minutes, and LaMelo Ball added 15 in his official debut with the Wolves, limited by foul trouble. The Raptors played without Kawhi Leonard due to left knee inflammation; Ja'Kobe Walter led them with 22.

Pacers 136-109 Nets

Tyrese Haliburton continued his return with 29 points and 10 assists in Brooklyn, and the Pacers won while shooting 49% from three and led by as much as 27. Pascal Siakam added 21 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists. The Nets, led by rookie Nolan Traore's 17 points, remain winless (0-3).

Grizzlies 123-112 Kings

Ty Jerome continues his hot streak. The point guard scored 31 points, going 14 of 14 from the free throw line, and leads the league in scoring at 36.5 per game. The Kings tied it at 106 in the final quarter, but the Grizzlies responded to improve to 3-0 without Zach Edey, sidelined with an ankle injury. Cameron Boozer added 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Zach LaVine scored 37 for a Kings team still searching for their first win.
