CHICAGO. The Washington Wizards will open the 2026 NBA Draft after winning the Lottery held this Sunday. The U.S. capital franchise secured the first overall pick for the first time in 16 years, since 2010 when they selected John Wall, who was present as the team's representative during the draw.
The capital team arrived at the Lottery with a 14% chance of landing the No. 1 pick, the same odds as the Brooklyn Nets and Indiana Pacers. Ultimately, fortune favored the Wizards, who are undergoing a deep rebuild after several seasons spent in the lower reaches of the league. This season they finished with a poor record of 17 wins and 65 losses, capping off a particularly challenging period for the organization.
The franchise made important moves last summer with the arrivals of Trae Young and Anthony Davis, and now will have the opportunity to add another impactful player to accelerate the growth of the project.
Behind Washington, the Utah Jazz will select second, the Memphis Grizzlies will pick third, and the Chicago Bulls will have the fourth pick. The fifth spot went to the Los Angeles Clippers thanks to a previously completed trade with the Indiana Pacers.
The 2026 Draft will begin on June 23 in New York, while the traditional Draft Combine will start Monday in Chicago with several of the top talents of the next NBA generation.
