Panathinaikos Shuts Down Olympiacos, Ties Greek Finals with Dominant Home Victory, 68-58

Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens evened the Greek League Finals with a 68-58 victory over Olympiacos in Game 2 of the series. The green squad built their win on suffocating defense, holding the reigning EuroLeague champion to just 58 points and tying the best-of-five series at 1-1.

Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens responded in the Greek League Finals and secured their first series victory against Olympiacos Piraeus. The green team prevailed 68-58 on Friday night at the Telekom Center Athens, in a game marked by the intensity of the home team's defense and the enormous offensive struggles of the reigning EuroLeague champion.

Olympiacos returned to the arena where just twelve days earlier it had won the EuroLeague title and started the game with better momentum. However, Panathinaikos managed to weather a sluggish opening, grew from behind, and ultimately imposed its rhythm to tie the Greek championship series, which now stands at 1-1.

Nigel Hayes-Davis was the offensive leader for Panathinaikos, with 23 points and an excellent 5-of-8 from three-point range. Cedi Osman also played an important role in the victory, contributing 11 points. For Olympiacos, Evan Fournier was once again the standout player, posting 15 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists, while Donta Hall added 11 points in the loss.

The opening favored Olympiacos. With Kostas Papanikolaou scoring 7 points and Sasha Vezenkov adding 5 more, the red-and-white squad closed the first quarter ahead, 9-15. The deficit reached 11-21 in the early stages of the second period, but Panathinaikos then began to shift the game through defense.

In a low-scoring affair, the greens gradually chipped away at the deficit. Olympiacos lost fluidity, Panathinaikos found more continuity, and the game reached halftime nearly tied. In the final seconds of the second quarter, Fournier and Vassilis Toliopoulos exchanged three-pointers to leave the score at 29-30 at the break.

The turning point came after halftime. Olympiacos managed only one made field goal and four total points during the first seven minutes of the third quarter. Panathinaikos capitalized on that offensive drought to take control. Mathias Lessort opened the period with a dunk, Kendrick Nunn added a three-pointer, and Jerian Grant made it 36-30.

From there, Hayes-Davis took over. Two three-pointers from him and a basket by Osman propelled Panathinaikos to 44-34, opening a ten-point lead that definitively changed the course of the game.

The home team entered the fourth quarter leading 48-38 and did not allow Olympiacos to find comfort on offense. Fournier scored from beyond the arc, but Hayes-Davis responded with another three-pointer and extended the lead to 57-43. Olympiacos attempted a comeback in the final stretch with a 0-7 run led by Hall and Fournier, closing to 63-56 with two minutes remaining.

But the comeback fell short. Panathinaikos maintained defensive solidity, closed out the game strong, and secured a victory of enormous emotional and competitive value. The Greek Finals are now tied, with the green team responding at home and making clear that the series remains wide open.
