Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Leads Oklahoma City Thunder Past Phoenix Suns for 2-0 Series Lead (120-107)
OKLAHOMA CITY. The Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the Phoenix Suns 120-107 in Game 2 of their first-round playoff series, taking a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference matchup. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was the standout performer with 37 points and 9 assists in a dominant response after a quiet shooting night in Game 1.
After shooting 5 of 18 from the field in Game 1, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander came out with offensive firepower this time around. The Canadian point guard, who received the Clutch Player of the Year award before the game, dominated from the opening tip and finished with a solid 13 of 25 from the field to lead the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The home team took control in the first half and went into halftime with a 65-57 advantage. Much of the offensive load was also carried by Jalen Williams, who scored 19 points before the break after making his first six field-goal attempts. Gilgeous-Alexander had already added 17 points by halftime.
The game intensified early in the third quarter when Dillon Brooks and Lu Dort had a brief altercation that resulted in double technical fouls. Rather than losing focus, the Oklahoma City Thunder accelerated even further.
Chet Holmgren was decisive after the halftime break. The center scored eight points in just over four minutes to open up a significant gap and push the score to 77-63. From there, the home defense and Phoenix's turnovers did the rest. Oklahoma City closed out the third quarter with a dominant 100-77 lead.
Early in the fourth quarter, the lead reached 26 points. The Phoenix Suns tried to mount a comeback with Devin Booker and a more aggressive final stretch, but never got closer than ten points. The game was firmly under control for the West's top seed.
Beyond Gilgeous-Alexander's 37 points, Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams each contributed 19 points, though Williams did not return after exiting in the third quarter with left hamstring soreness. The Oklahoma City Thunder shot 47.3% from the field and forced 21 turnovers from their opponent.
For the Phoenix Suns, Dillon Brooks led the scoring with 30 points before fouling out. Devin Booker added 22 and Jalen Green chipped in 21.
The victory gives the Oklahoma City Thunder a commanding 2-0 series lead and maintains the strength of the top seeds in an NBA playoff run full of early surprises.
Game 3 will be played Saturday in Phoenix, where the Suns will be forced to respond to avoid being on the brink of elimination.
