Miami Heat continues to make moves in the market after closing one of the summer's biggest deals with the arrival of Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Florida franchise will also retain Simone Fontecchio, who will sign a new one-year contract, according to Shams Charania
The 30-year-old Italian wing will continue to be a rotation piece for the team, which is focused on surrounding Giannis with reliable, physical players capable of spacing the floor. Fontecchio comes off a season in which he appeared in 70 games with Miami, averaging 8.5 points and 3 rebounds, along with a 37.5% three-point percentage.
His retention fits within the Heat's new salary cap situation, which after the major move for Antetokounmpo has less room to pursue big names in free agency. That's why the priority is to keep and add role players who can complement their new star.
Fontecchio brings size, outside shooting, and versatility on the wings—three qualities especially valuable for playing around Giannis. His extension adds to the continuity of Andrew Wiggins, who also agreed to a new three-year, $64 million contract.
Miami, meanwhile, continues to monitor the market and has shown interest in profiles like Bradley Beal, Tim Hardaway Jr., and Mike Conley, with the goal of strengthening the backcourt and completing a roster built to compete immediately in the Eastern Conference.
