LUGO. Casademont Zaragoza will remain in the Liga Endesa for another season after pulling off one of the most incredible comebacks of the year. The Aragonese side defeated Río Breogán 94-95 at the Pazo thanks to an impossible three-pointer by Marco Spissu at the buzzer—a basket that secures their survival and will be etched forever in the club's recent history.
When the game seemed completely lost, Gonzalo García de Vitoria's squad found a way to resurrect themselves. With barely 24 seconds remaining and down by six points, a succession of frantic plays culminated in the Italian point guard's game-winning shot, unleashing pandemonium on the Zaragoza bench.
The game started with a constant exchange of blows. Río Breogán found points from beyond the arc thanks to Bakary Dibba's accuracy, while Santi Yusta kept Casademont Zaragoza's offensive rhythm intact.
Both teams played at an elevated pace for much of the first half, though it was the Galician side that managed to open the first significant gap. Taking advantage of several visiting turnovers and Francis Alonso's offensive accuracy, Luis Casimiro's squad reached a seven-point lead (39-32) in the second quarter.
The Aragonese side reacted in time. Marco Spissu took control of the offense and, alongside Miguel González, led a 0-7 run that restored parity on the scoreboard before halftime.
The second half followed the same script. Río Breogán continued finding offensive solutions too easily and constantly forced Casademont Zaragoza to fight an uphill battle.
Francis Alonso became a genuine nightmare for the visiting defense. Two consecutive three-pointers from the Málaga shooting guard sent the Lucense side soaring again and set off alarms on the Zaragoza bench (67-59).
But when the situation seemed most complicated, the leaders of Casademont Zaragoza appeared. Marco Spissu, Dwayne Wright-Foreman, and Devin Robinson stepped up to construct a comeback that allowed the visitors to take the lead following a 6-16 run (73-75).
The game then entered an exchange of blows charged with tension.
With Casademont Zaragoza heavily hampered by personal fouls, Francis Alonso again took on responsibilities and kept Río Breogán alive. Bell-Haynes responded with a spectacular and-one, but two consecutive three-pointers from DeWayne Russell seemed to definitively bring victory to the Galicians (88-81).
Time was running out and relegation seemed a reality for the Aragonese.
However, the ending still had one more chapter in store for history.
With less than half a minute remaining, Casademont Zaragoza trailed 93-87. A three-pointer from Bell-Haynes brought hope back. Then came a crucial free throw miss from Andric that kept the visiting team's last chance alive.
Bell-Haynes made the first free throw and intentionally missed the second. The rebound fell into Zaragoza hands and the ball eventually reached Marco Spissu, completely open on the perimeter.
The Italian didn't hesitate.
His shot went through the net at the buzzer to set the final score at 94-95, silence the Pazo Provincial de Lugo, and seal a survival that seemed impossible just seconds before.
With this victory, Casademont Zaragoza secures its continuity in the Liga Endesa and completes an epic comeback on a night that will be remembered forever. Río Breogán, which had victory in its hands for much of the game, saw it slip away in one of the most dramatic finishes of the season.
