Valencia Basket Confirms Poor Form, Falling at Home to FC Barcelona Despite Injuries (62-66)

Valencia Basket, desperate for victories, hosted a depleted FC Barcelona side also struggling with inconsistent results. Both teams arrived at this matchup having suffered notable defeats in their previous two games—one in EuroLeague and another away in the ACB League. Despite the final day of Las Fallas festivities, the arena drew a strong crowd for this European clash between two of Spain's best teams.

The home side, with a record of 20 wins and 11 losses, faced the Catalan team carrying 17 wins and 14 losses in Europe's top competition.

Head coach Pedro Martínez's technical absences would be: Kameron Taylor due to injury, Xabi López-Arostegui, and Isaac Nogués. Barcelona, despite the absence of Laprovittola, arrived at the game with several players dealing with minor injuries, with the Blaugrana placing their hopes on Punter and Clyburn to assault the Valencia fortress.

Valencia Basket Starting Lineup: Brancou Badio, Darius Thompson, Josep Puerto, Jaime Pradilla, and Nate Reuvers.

FC Barcelona Starting Lineup: Satoransky, Punter, Cale, Parra, and Vesely (who would be substituted in the first minute of the game by Willy Hernangómez due to foot discomfort)

The first basket of the game was scored by Valencia Basket's Darius Thompson, notably the Italian player had been losing prominence in recent games and remains a key piece for the 'orange' project this season. (2-0)

FC Barcelona took the first lead of the game after the opening three minutes of play (2-5), with Parra accounting for 4 of the first 5 points, becoming the primary offensive weapon for Xavi Pascual's team.

The first timeout came with five minutes remaining in the first quarter (6-7). After the resumption, Jean Montero hit a three-pointer to return the advantage to the home side (9-7). A tightly contested end to the first quarter would close with a slim three-point advantage for the Blaugrana. Jean Montero, with 7 points, was the game's best performer to that point. Juani Marcos hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to extend the visitors' lead to +3. (15-18)

The second quarter, beginning with a Blaugrana advantage on the scoreboard, would force Pedro Martínez's team to react as their offense was performing well below season averages.

The first basket of the second quarter came from Darío Brizuela, who hit a spectacular three-pointer. Shortly after, following a Reuvers miss, Vesely scored from mid-range, a shot he's been making his whole career—something Pedro Martínez needed to stop when barely a minute of the second quarter had elapsed (15-23).

After the timeout resumption, a three-pointer from Clyburn extended the visitors' lead to +11 (15-26). Valencia Basket was not having its best first half; shots weren't falling while Barcelona's players began connecting on multiple three-pointers at the end of possessions.

Josep Puerto, from three-point range, broke Valencia Basket's shooting drought (20-26), but once again Clyburn scored from long distance (20-29). The end of the first half was marked by a succession of misses on both sides of the court, with a Valencia Basket that didn't feel comfortable against an FC Barcelona that was living off the first 25 minutes. A corner three-pointer from captain Josep Puerto brought the Valencians to within just two points. (33-35)

Valencia Basket and FC Barcelona returned to the court after halftime. To this point, it couldn't be said this was the most attractive game of the season—an inaccurate VBC couldn't play the way it preferred against an FCB that seemed to be playing in spurts.

The first basket of the second half came from number 4, Jaime Pradilla of Valencia Basket, who tied the game at 35. Shortly after, Clyburn extended the Blaugrana lead to +2 (35-37), and Darius Thompson connected on the third quarter's first three-pointer (38-37).

Valencia Basket's performance improved significantly in this third quarter. Greater accuracy from the field also forced Barcelona to react, adopting a faster-paced style of play with quicker possessions and consequently more scoring.

With four minutes remaining, Braxton Key tied the game at 47 with a three-pointer. Shortly after, a corner three-pointer from Omari Moore gave the home side a +3 lead (50-47). Finally, this third quarter ended with a +1 advantage for the Blaugrana. A final basket from Joel Parra, who with 12 points was the game's leading scorer to that point, put his team ahead. (52-53)

Ten interesting final minutes remained to be played at the Roig Arena, a tightly contested game that either team could win. Neak Sako (8 points to that point) scored the first basket of the final quarter (54-53). The Frenchman has improved as the season has progressed. Shortly after, the center would add two more points from the free-throw line (56-53), bringing his total to ten points, making him Valencia Basket's leading scorer to that point. Eight minutes remained until the end of the game.

A straight-on three-pointer from Clyburn with 25.6 seconds remaining could condemn Valencia Basket, who trailed by 2 (62-64). Matt Costello missed the game's final possession, turning the ball over. A poor finish for Valencia Basket, now with three consecutive losses and much to improve under Pedro Martínez. Joel Parra with 16 points was the game's best performer. (62-66)

A vital victory for FC Barcelona, who after falling in their last two games, Xavi Pascual's side regain confidence heading into this stretch of the season. Poor end-of-game management from the home side, with boos heard directed at the players after the final buzzer.

Valencia Basket's next game will be Sunday (17:00, Matchday 23) against Covirán Granada, the league's final-place team. Coincidentally, the Andalusian side has only two wins all season—one coming in the first matchup against Valencia Basket (85-79) and the other in their most recent league game against Manresa.

For FC Barcelona, the Blaugrana will travel to the Spanish capital to play the classic matchup at the Movistar Arena. Real Madrid, coming off spectacular recent victories, will host Xavi Pascual's side in the final regular-season classic of the season.
