Draymond Green Stays with Warriors After Failed LeBron Pursuit

Draymond Green will continue with the Golden State Warriors. After declining his player option while the franchise attempted to enter the race for LeBron James, the center has signed a new one-year contract worth $27.7 million, the same amount he had initially left on the table.

The move closes a strange situation. Green had waited for LeBron's future to be resolved, with the idea of creating maneuvering room for the Warriors if there was a real possibility of pairing the Lakers player with Stephen Curry in San Francisco. But LeBron ultimately chose the Philadelphia 76ers and Golden State had to reorganize its own roster.

That's where Mike Dunleavy Jr.'s decision comes in: returning to Draymond the money he had given up. A gesture of confidence, yes, but also a way to keep standing what remains of the dynasty's historic core.

Green will thus face his 15th season with the Warriors, always under the command of Steve Kerr and alongside Curry, the player who has best understood his strengths throughout his career. His defense, basketball IQ, leadership and ability to orchestrate from the center position continue to have value within Golden State's system.

The question is how much everything else weighs now. The Warriors just missed the playoffs and the project seems increasingly near the end of a cycle. Green's continuity maintains identity, but by itself doesn't change the competitive ceiling of a roster that needs more energy, more reliability and less nostalgia.

Golden State keeps one of its great symbols. Now it remains to be seen if that's enough to compete or simply to extend a story that no longer has the strength of other years.
