The Juan de la Cierva hosted today the first derby between Movistar Estudiantes and Partizan Fuenlabrada of the season. The matchup was the final preseason game for both teams. The Fuenlabrada side returned from a high-level experience after facing two EuroLeague teams, Partizan Belgrade and Besiktas, while the Madrid club had faced Alicante and Gipuzkoa.
The first quarter began with a masterclass from Fuenlabrada, who delighted their fans with great passes from Mateo Díaz and several blocks (0-9). Movistar Estudiantes briefly recovered (8-11) until the debut of Serbian Goran Huskić, who demonstrated his quality in two plays by scoring 5 points. The rest of the quarter was an exchange of baskets between both teams. This benefited Iñaki Martín's team, who closed the period with an advantage (20-24).
The second quarter started with an unattractive game from both sides. They committed many personal fouls and made the game physical, which affected the scoring (24-26). This dynamic favored Toni Ten's team and they took the lead for the first time (28-32). The Madrid side pulled away with great three-point shooting from the talented Omar Silverio, who sent them to halftime with a double-digit lead against a stalled Fuenlabrada offense (50-40).
The second half brought considerable controversy and complaints from the Fuenlabrada fans toward the referees. The complaints started after Iván Cruz was ejected for fouls following a technical foul call. This decision affected the course of the quarter, which ended 79-65. This difference seemed almost insurmountable, although Iñaki Martín's team continued fighting to stay close on the scoreboard. The good news for Partizan Fuenlabrada was the return to the court of Goran Huskić at such a high level after being away from the court for over a year due to an anterior cruciate ligament tear.
The fourth quarter began with a very aggressive Fuenlabrada team that accelerated the pace to cut into the deficit (86-75). The comeback attempt was led by Vítor Benite and fans who gave maximum support to their team with deafening chants (93-84). You could tell the game was a derby because, despite being a preseason matchup, both teams wanted to claim victory. Despite Partizan Fuenlabrada's efforts, Movistar Estudiantes won the preseason derby (100-90).
