EuroLeague Enforces Financial Controls, Sanctions Four Clubs for Salary Cap Violations

EuroLeague's new financial framework is already having real consequences. The competition has confirmed that four teams exceeded the salary limits set for the 2025-26 season, resulting in financial penalties within the competitive balance system.

The affected clubs are Panathinaikos BC, Anadolu Efes, Hapoel Tel Aviv BC, and Olympiacos BC, all penalized for exceeding the base compensation level established by the league.

The most significant case is Panathinaikos, whose budget overage has been the highest, forcing the club to pay a penalty exceeding three million euros. In a second tier are Anadolu Efes and Hapoel Tel Aviv, both also above the threshold but with more modest figures, while Olympiacos completes the list after a smaller overage linked, among other factors, to Mustafa Fall's contractual situation.

Beyond individual figures, the system's objective is clear: to balance competition. The money collected does not stay with the organization but is redistributed among clubs that respected the limits, mirroring a model similar to the luxury tax applied in the NBA.

In parallel, not all violations were due to overspending. LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne has been sanctioned for the opposite: failing to meet the mandatory minimum investment in roster spending. This situation requires the club to compensate its players directly, in addition to facing a financial fine and sporting restrictions until regularizing its position.

This entire scenario is framed within a phase of regulatory transition. EuroLeague is progressively introducing these control mechanisms, which will not be fully mandatory until the 2027-28 season. Until then, sanctions are limited, but they already draw a clear line: financial control is here to stay.

In this context, Panathinaikos sought to gain leeway by requesting an extension in the application of these rules, although the proposal did not gain the necessary support. Its next move has been to request payment facilities, a matter pending resolution in future league meetings.
