EuroLeague: Zalgiris Activates Sylvain Francisco Succession Plan, Targets Matthew Strazel
Zalgiris Kaunas is already working on the future of its point guard position ahead of Sylvain Francisco's likely departure this summer. The French point guard, with options to continue his career at Dubai Basketball, Barcelona, or even the NBA, could exercise his exit clause, and the Lithuanian club has been preparing for that scenario.
According to the latest reports, Zalgiris's primary target to fill the starting point guard role is Matthew Strazel. The AS Monaco player, just 23 years old, has impressed with his growth over recent seasons and his ability to lead the game on both ends of the floor.
Although Strazel is under contract with the Monegasque club until 2029, the uncertainty surrounding Monaco's sporting and financial future could facilitate significant moves during the summer. The French international, who was already part of the French national team at the Paris Olympics, has averaged 9.2 points and 4 assists in the EuroLeague this season, while posting 13 points and 5 assists per game in the French league.
In Kaunas, they believe Strazel fits perfectly as the natural successor to Francisco thanks to his playmaking ability, his defense, and an increasingly reliable three-point shot. Additionally, his youth makes him a prospect for both the present and future of the Lithuanian project.
Zalgiris is also keeping other alternatives open to strengthen the point guard position. Names on the agenda include Kobi Simmons, currently at Baskonia, and Matt Morgan, from Virtus Bologna, although the club's absolute priority right now is to try to secure the signing of Matthew Strazel.
