LeBron James Keeps His Future Open

LeBron James' future is back at the center of the NBA free agency market. At this stage, his continuity with the Los Angeles Lakers no longer seems as automatic as it might have seemed weeks ago, and around the league there is growing sense that the player has several options on the table.

According to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report, contact between LeBron and the Lakers during this offseason has been sparse. In fact, the Los Angeles franchise has yet to present a formal offer to the four-time NBA champion, a situation that keeps the scenario completely open.

The door to staying in Los Angeles is not closed, but it is not the only one either. Fischer pointed out that within the league, in the Lakers' inner circle and from Klutch Sports, there is a perception that LeBron has multiple possible paths before deciding his future. He even suggested that, as of today, it could be more likely to see him outside the Lakers than dressed in purple and gold again.

Meanwhile, the franchise's basketball planning seems focused on another priority. The Lakers would be focusing much of their efforts on strengthening the center position, looking for a big man that fits alongside Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves, especially as a threat in the pick-and-roll and above the rim.

That context adds even more uncertainty to the situation. LeBron remains a giant figure within the NBA, but the Lakers seem to be building their roadmap around other immediate needs. The continuity of the "King" remains possible, although for the first time in a long time the market is beginning to look beyond Los Angeles.
