The numbers behind the commute
The distance between both cities explains the decision. By car with no traffic, the trip takes between an hour and a half and one hour and forty-five minutes. With traffic, it can stretch to four hours.
By helicopter, between forty and forty-five minutes.

What he said at Media Day
On Monday, at his introduction as a Sixers player, he was asked directly where he would live. His answer was ambiguous: he said he would reside "in both" cities and would have "multiple residences".
Three days later, the reality is more concrete. His base is in New York.
The Knicks connection
The detail makes sense with what he himself revealed that same day. He acknowledged that he considered five teams before signing and that he ruled out the New York Knicks solely because they had just won the championship.
"I had visualized playing at Madison Square Garden and finishing my career there. It's the number one arena in the world as a basketball player," he said then.
He doesn't play in New York. But he lives there.
