Monbus Obradoiro vs. Río Breogán: Galician Derby Returns to Liga Endesa

The Galician derby returns to Liga Endesa and it does so in Santiago. Monbus Obradoiro hosts Río Breogán this Sunday (12:00) at Fontes do Sar in the first of six Galician derbies this season, a figure completed by Leyma Coruña. It's the first time since 2023-24 that Santiago and Lugo face off in the ACB.

Everything points to equality. The all-time record in the top division is tied at four wins each, with only five points difference in the overall tally (608-603 in favor of Obradoiro), and both arrive with the same record this season: three wins and two losses. Fontes do Sar, however, has been Santiago territory: Obradoiro won three of the four derbies played at home, and the only Lugo victory in Santiago dates back to 2023 (67-74).

Two opposite styles

Both also arrive after losing in the last matchday. Río Breogán is one of the most dangerous offenses in the league: only Real Madrid scores more, and it's the only team among the top three in accuracy for both two-pointers and three-pointers. Their streak of games over 100 points was snapped by Unicaja at the Pazo. Obradoiro, on the other hand, has earned its three wins as the team with the worst shooting percentage in Liga Endesa, and comes off a clear loss in La Laguna.

The Quintelas and a blue past

The derby will have a family component. Sergi and Erik Quintela shared a locker room at Río Breogán in the last six derbies, and on Sunday they'll be on opposite sides: Sergi with Obradoiro and Erik with Breogán. Precisely in a derby, the first leg of 2023-24, Sergi posted his best game in the ACB (19 points and 27 rating).

There's also Lugo history on the Santiago bench. Diego Epifanio, head coach of Monbus Obradoiro, was the one who directed Río Breogán's last promotion to Liga Endesa.

The derby will also be experienced in Lugo, where the Lugo Monumental Business Association will install a giant screen in Plaza de Santa María.
