ATLANTA. The New York Knicks destroyed the Atlanta Hawks 140-89 in Game 6 of the NBA playoffs and closed out the series with a historic performance led by OG Anunoby and Karl-Anthony Towns. The New York squad recorded the largest playoff victory in franchise history and advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals after stringing together three consecutive wins after falling behind 1-2 in the series.
The night began with absolute dominance from the New York Knicks from the opening tip. The team coached by Tom Thibodeau completely overwhelmed the Atlanta Hawks with suffocating defensive intensity and devastating offensive execution. The first quarter ended with a commanding 40-15, establishing the largest first-quarter lead in the shot-clock era of the NBA.
OG Anunoby was the star of the opening. The small forward scored 26 of his 29 points before halftime and constantly punished Atlanta's defense both in transition and from beyond the arc. Alongside him, Mikal Bridges also found space with ease and finished the game with 24 points in another solid performance for the Knicks.
The lead continued to grow unstoppably during the second quarter. The New York Knicks reached halftime with a 47-point advantage, the largest recorded in NBA playoff history at the end of a first half. The Atlanta Hawks never found offensive answers and accumulated 14 turnovers before the break, while also shooting a poor 12 of 39 from the field and 4 of 18 from three-point range.
The game also featured a tense moment when Dyson Daniels and Mitchell Robinson were ejected following an altercation after free throws made by Anunoby that extended the Knicks' lead to 50 points.
With the game completely decided, Karl-Anthony Towns left his mark on the series once again. The Dominican center finished with a triple-double of 12 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists, the second he has recorded in this series. Just five days after becoming the fourth player in New York Knicks history to record a triple-double in NBA playoffs, Towns once again led his team's collective play with tremendous authority.
The visiting team's superiority was so overwhelming that the Knicks surpassed the 100-point mark when there were still 8:21 remaining in the third quarter. Shortly after, the New York Knicks starters left the bench for good with the game completely settled.
For the Atlanta Hawks, Jalen Johnson was the only player able to sustain any offensive production with 21 points. Nickeil Alexander-Walker, CJ McCollum, and Jonathan Kuminga each contributed 11 points in a difficult night for the Georgia squad.
The victory allowed the New York Knicks to complete a spectacular comeback in the series following the two consecutive one-point losses that had left the New Yorkers against the ropes in these NBA playoffs.
Now, the Knicks await their opponent in the Eastern Conference semifinals, where they will face the winner of the series between the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers. For the Atlanta Hawks, the loss marks the end of the season after a series that ended traumatically with one of the largest blowouts in NBA playoff history.
