jul 29 2026Panathinaikos is seeking another elite point guard and has set its sights on Nigel Williams-Goss. According to BasketNews, the Greek club has entered the race for the Zalgiris Kaunas player with force, despite the American being under contract with the Lithuanian team.
The operation is not straightforward. Williams-Goss signed a 2+1 contract with Zalgiris last summer, and according to reports, he does not have an exit clause this summer. That leaves the Kaunas club in a strong contractual position, although Panathinaikos' financial pressure could change the scenario.
The Greek team, one of the most ambitious projects in the European market, is looking to strengthen its point guard position with an established floor general. It had already been linked to Sylvain Francisco with very high figures on the table, and now Williams-Goss' name is gaining weight.
The 31-year-old American point guard, standing 1.91 meters tall, is expected to be a key piece in Tomas Masiulis' new Zalgiris project. His role was to be important in orchestrating the offense, feeding the new American wings, and connecting with Jonas Valanciunas in the paint.
That's the problem for Zalgiris. This is not a secondary player, but their starting point guard and one of the key figures in the project. Additionally, the market for EuroLeague-level point guards does not offer many alternatives at this stage of the summer.
Panathinaikos, however, plays with a powerful card: money. Williams-Goss would earn close to 1.4 million euros at Zalgiris, and the Greek offer could approach double that amount. That could push the Lithuanian club to make a difficult decision: resist, negotiate a trade, or even improve the player's contract to ensure his continuity.
For now there is no deal closed, but there is clear pressure. Panathinaikos wants to resolve its point guard situation soon and Williams-Goss has become a serious target. Zalgiris, meanwhile, is trying to protect a piece it considers fundamental.
